Has the Dixiecrat died?
October 1, 2011 - 12:34am / ben.waltersIf you came to the deep south unfamiliar with the culture that would change quickly. You would most likely be greeted warmly and quickly grow an appreciation for football games and tailgating on Saturdays, church on Sunday, country music, endless buffets with all the southern "fixins" you could imagine. I also'd reckon you'd probably pick up a nice little southern draw. Let's face it, once you become adapted to the southern lifestyle, you gain an appreciation for the simpler things in life and realize there's nothing else like it.
Another staple of southern tradition is the conservatism that characterizes politics. The southern style, conservative democrat is known as a dixie-crat. And as the national democratic party moves increasingly farther to the left, the closer the dixie-crat becomes to being extinct. Many old fashioned blue dog democrats are becomming republicans and we are doing all we can to encourage this in our campaigns and through every conversation our volunteers are having with students and voters. There is alot of dedication here to flip the state house red. Finally, I can report that for the first time since reconstruction we have a decent shot of having an entirely republican-controlled state government, but we will need a HUGE October to make it a RED November!
